Artistic Roots

Matt Wilson
Painter | Inner City Decay
My initial works sprouted from my childhood love of skateboarding and the culture surrounding that underground world. Growing up, I was heavily influenced by skateboard graphics and monthly magazines from Thrasher, which quickly shaped the style and aesthetics I was naturally drawn to. With skateboarding comes a large desire for city life, and with that comes the connection between skateboarding and graffiti that started to force my eyes to look at the world differently. Now my work, mainly studio-based, reflects the everyday destruction and decay that skateboarding, graffiti, and just people have on objects and structures that we walk by continuously without giving them a second look.
I focus on specific shapes and placements that build up thick layers representing decay, whether that be fire hydrants with layers of old paint, old rusty cars, cigarettes on the sidewalk, or graffiti from the early 2000s chipping off of train cars.
As of late, I've been depicting the initial start of destruction (specifically crashes) with a more monotone color scale. I'm very into street photography and am heavily influenced by photographers like Ed Templeton, Jerry Hsu, Daniel Arnold, and Trevor Wisecup, who shoot a lot of black and white 35mm.
